Before you book

  • Cars in this class: Peugeot 308, Hyundai i30, Fiat Tipo. You book the class, not a named car. You will get one of these models or another car of the same size, never a smaller one, and you are told which car it is when you collect.
  • You choose manual or automatic when you book, and the car you collect has that gearbox. Automatics in this class start at €14.40 a day.
  • Licence held 2 years or more, minimum age 21. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver fee, shown in your total.
  • The hold needs a credit card in the main driver's name. Debit, prepaid and virtual cards are not accepted for it.
  • Fuel is like for like. The level is recorded with you at pickup and the car comes back at the same level.
  • Add your flight number at checkout so delays are tracked and your car is held.
  • Pick-up and drop-off are both in Luqa. One-way returns are not available.

The compact car in Malta

A family hatchback: five seats, a boot of about 400 litres and more rear legroom than the economy class, which four adults notice on a full day out to Mellieħa or the Dingli cliffs.

It fits standard parking bays. In Valletta and the Three Cities, park outside the old walls and walk in, and leave it outside Mdina altogether: almost no cars are allowed inside its gates.

Compact or compact SUV?

Both seat five and carry about the same: 400 litres here, 410 in the compact SUV. The compact SUV sits higher, which some drivers like at roundabouts. The compact is lower.

Is a compact big enough for a family of four?

With two large suitcases and soft bags around them, yes. With four large suitcases, book the SUV class or the leisure van.
