Birżebbuġa sits on Malta's south-east coast, and one of its practical advantages is simply how close it is to the airport: the drive from Malta International Airport is one of the shortest of any town on the island, roughly 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. You collect your car in Luqa with meet-and-greet, so there is no shuttle to a separate depot, and you can be at your accommodation quickly, which is handy after a long flight or before an early departure. Pretty Bay, Għar Dalam and the town itself

Birżebbuġa has a genuine local hook that sets it apart from the resort towns. Pretty Bay is the town's own sandy beach, a rare stretch of sand on this stretch of coast and popular with families, right on the doorstep. Just outside the town is Għar Dalam, the "Cave of Darkness", a prehistoric cave and museum where the fossilised bones of long-extinct animals were found and which marks some of the earliest evidence of people in Malta, managed by Heritage Malta. It is worth knowing that the large Malta Freeport container terminal sits across the bay, so the setting mixes a working port with the beach and the old town, part of what gives Birżebbuġa its own distinct character rather than a polished resort feel.

Exploring the south-east by car

Public transport in this corner of the island can be slow, so a car makes the south-east far easier to string together. From a Birżebbuġa base you are well placed for:
