Driving into Valletta: what to know

Valletta is a compact, UNESCO-listed peninsula with many pedestrian-only streets and controlled vehicle access to its historic centre. It is not somewhere you drive around freely, so most visitors leave the car nearby and explore on foot, which is by far the easiest way to see it.

Where to park for Valletta

• Just outside the city: there is a large car park near the entrance at Floriana, within easy walking distance of City Gate.
• Park and ride: a shuttle runs from the Floriana area into the city for a small fee.
• By ferry: if you are based in Sliema or the Three Cities, the harbour ferry is a quick, scenic way in, leaving the car at your base.

Is a car worth it for Valletta?

For Valletta alone, a car is optional, the city is best on foot. But a hire car earns its keep the moment you want to combine the capital with Mdina, the beaches in the north or a day in Gozo, all of which are slow and awkward by bus.
